Summer crackdown for city police

Police in Bristol have launched a new initiative against street robbery during the summer months.

Additional high-visibility patrols and greater use of plain clothes officers will be used in some of the city's robbery hotspots.

Operation Beet would run until the end of June, a police spokesman said.

Young people are also to be encouraged to register high-value equipment on the national Immobilise database which helps to identify stolen property.

Det Insp Geoff Leeson said that in addition to the high visibility patrols, the work of school-based officers would be "crucial" in educating young people about personal safety and emphasising "the risks of carrying around so much valuable equipment".
