Dog owners are being told there is no excuse for not cleaning up
|
Action is to be stepped up in Bristol against dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets.
Throughout the summer, posters will be displayed in the city's parks and cards congratulating responsible dog owners will also be handed out.
'Poop scoop' bags will be made available from the dog wardens service, vets' practices and Bristol Dogs Home.
In the autumn, tougher measures will be launched when police community support officers get new powers to issue fines.
No excuse
Last year, the city's dog warden service received 287 complaints about dog fouling in public places.
Councillor Gary Hopkins said: "It is an offence not to clear up immediately after your dog has fouled.
"The council will take action against irresponsible dog owners who fail to do so - being unaware of the offence or not having a device to clear away the dog fouling is no excuse."
Dog wardens can already issue on-the-spot fines of £50 to people they witness offending.
From October, PCSOs will also be given powers under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act to issue fixed penalty notices.
If the fine is not paid within 14 days, then court proceedings will be taken against the owner or keeper of the dog.
