Bell silenced during repair work
Great George bell being rung
The bell will be silenced until September
Great George, Bristol's largest bell, housed in the University of Bristol's Wills Memorial Building, will be switched off at midday on Tuesday.

The bell will be silenced until the beginning of September, while 750,000 of restoration work is carried out on the 215-foot, Grade II* listed tower.

The stonework is being cleaned and the building illuminated by floodlights.

The nine-and-a-half-tonne bell is the third largest in the county that can be swung by rope and wheel.

When cast in 1924 it was regarded as the finest E-flat bell in Europe.
