Motorists were warned to take extra care on South West roads after snow and freezing conditions were forecast.
The Met Office said some areas would get snowfall of up to 2cm, creating difficult driving conditions on Monday night and Tuesday morning.
There would also be some icy patches on untreated roads, it said.
An RAC spokeswoman said: "If you don't have to use your car, then don't, it's amazing how many journeys are safer on foot in these conditions."
On Monday evening there were reports of slow-moving traffic on the M4 between Membury Services and junction 15, due to snow settling on the carriageways.
The Highways Agency advised motorists to check weather conditions before setting off.
It also advised drivers to allow extra braking distance and use the highest gear possible when driving in snow to avoid wheelspin.
