Stolen goods seized in crackdown
Police seized more than £200,000 of stolen goods and drugs during a month of spot checks for driving offences.

Officers in Avon and Somerset spent January attempting to crack down on drivers using mobile phones and those who drive without wearing a seatbelt.

During the month they pulled over almost 5,000 motorists - of those 693 were given fixed fines for various driving offences.

But a further 272 were arrested for drink and drug driving and burglary.

Police say 39 of the 272 were for drink driving, 45 for disqualified driving and four for driving while under the influence of drugs.

A further 25 were for burglary, 22 for car crime and 15 for drugs offenses.

One person was arrested for his eighth drink driving related offence and was jailed for 24 weeks.

Avon and Somerset Police say during February they will be concentrating on speeding near accident blackspots.
