Jury out in city stabbing trial

Liam Attwell died three days after being stabbed

The jury in the case of a teenager accused of stabbing to death a man who intervened in a robbery has retired to consider its verdict.

The 17-year-old from Bristol, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has denied murdering Liam Attwell.

Bristol Crown Court has heard how Mr Attwell was attacked as he tried to intervene in a mobile phone robbery in the Canon's Marsh area of Bristol on October 3 last year.

The 25-year-old chef suffered a single stab wound to the chest and died three days later in hospital without regaining consciousness.

Earlier in the trial Richard Smith QC, prosecuting, said the defendant was part of a small group on bikes who bullied, intimidated and robbed three teenage boys from Wiltshire, threatening one of them with a knife.

He said when Mr Attwell saw what was happening he stepped in, allowing the teenagers to escape, but was himself attacked by the gang.

But the defendant told the jury Mr Attwell had run onto the knife.
