Remains not missing rock star
Richey Edwards
Richey Edwards went missing eight years ago
A skeleton found by the River Severn is not that of missing Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards, tests have revealed.

Mr Edwards, 27, from Blackwood in south Wales, vanished in February 1995 at a time when the band were becoming household names and were about to embark on a US tour.

Two weeks after he left a London hotel room, his Vauxhall Cavalier was found abandoned at motorway services near the Old Severn Bridge linking England and Wales.

The bones of a man were found in riverside mud near Bristol on Tuesday evening.

They were discovered by anglers at Chittening Warth, Hallen.

Police confirmed on Saturday that a detailed examination of the teeth and skull had shown that the remains were not those of the missing rock star.

"Investigations are continuing to discover the identity of the person and this could take several weeks," said a spokesman.

Officers working on the case are contacting neighbouring forces and Interpol to check missing person records.

They have asked anyone with information which could help the inquiry to contact them.

There have been reports of sightings of Mr Edwards both home and abroad - although there has never been any confirmed information - and they have only added to the mystery surrounding his disappearance.

His family have always refused to give up their quest to find the musician, who would now be 35 years old.

Band members James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore have continued to pay the guitarist's share of their royalties into a trust fund for him if he returns.

His parents were entitled to claim his estate after seven years - but vowed never to give up hope that he may be found one day.
