Girl dies after being hit by car

A six-year-old girl has died after being knocked down by a car as she crossed a road in West Yorkshire.

The girl, who has not been named, was hit by a Toyota Town Ace as she crossed Wharf Street, Dewsbury, with relatives at midday on Friday, police said.

She was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital where she later died.

Wharf Street was closed while emergency services attended the scene. An inquest is due to be opened by the coroner in Dewsbury on Monday.
