Reading Half Marathon potholes safety concern

Reading Half Marathon
Race organisers hope that pothole repairs will make the course safe

The race director of the Reading Half Marathon has said he is concerned potholes in the roads could make the route too "dangerous".

Chris Sumner said he hoped the council would go ahead with its pledge to fix the roads in time for Sunday's race.

Work was due to start on the roads on Wednesday, before being assessed by a safety officer prior to the race.

Mr Sumner said he would have to take the advice of the race's safety officer into account before the event.

He said: "If our safety officer says the road is simply too dangerous to run down, I would have to take that into account."

Sarah Bishton, spokeswoman for Reading Borough Council, said: "In line with other years, Reading Borough Council's highways inspectors have inspected the race route prior to the half marathon and identified areas of road that need to be repaired as a priority.

"Teams are due to carry out the necessary repairs in time for the race on Sunday."
