Teenage cafe opens for business

A cafe set up and run by young people has opened in a Berkshire borough.

The Youth Cafe in Wokingham, for 13 to 19-year-olds was established by a 14-strong teenage committee, backed by the borough council's youth service.

The committee, which received a grant of £3,055 from the Youth Opportunities Fund, has undergone training including food hygiene and customer service.

The café was established after young people complained they did not have a place to socialise in large groups.

Councillor Rob Stanton, Wokingham's executive member for children's services, said: "It is a key priority for us to provide young people with positive activities, good facilities and a safe environment to spend time in."

The cafe, which is based at Wokingham Youth Centre just outside of the town centre, is now looking for more volunteers, a council spokesman said.
