Preparations have taken place in Windsor for a UK state visit by the President of India, closing roads across the town.

President Pratibha Patil and her husband will meet The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh for a procession through the town to Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

A full rehearsal took place, with road closures between 0945 and 1500, which will also apply on Tuesday.

The council said vehicles parked on the roads on either day would be removed.

All roads have since reopened.

Tuesday's event will see the same diversions in place and police will be on patrol to help drivers if needed, a Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead spokesperson said.

Most car parks will be open, with the exception of River Street, Home Park and King Edward VII in Datchet Road.

Crowds expected

Crowd control barriers will be put in place along the route, from Datchet Road to Windsor Castle, from 0300 GMT.

Members of the public are expected to turn out to watch the procession.

A viewing area for people with disabilities and carers has been set up at the King George V Memorial statue at the bottom of Thames Street.

Businesses will be open as usual.

"This will be Windsor's seventh state visit since 1998 and once again the Royal Borough, Thames Valley Police and partner agencies are working together to help this high profile event take place smoothly with the least possible disruption to local businesses and residents," the council said.

The procession route will be: Datchet Road, Thames Street, High Street, Park Street, Long Walk, Cambridge Gate, Cambridge Drive and the Long Walk to Windsor Castle.

Other roads affected are: Castle Hill, Thames Avenue, Barry Avenue, River Street, Goswell Road, Farm Yard, B470 King Edward VII Avenue and B470 Windsor Road, Datchet.

Short-term closures at certain times of the day, to allow for troop movements, include Sheet Street, St Leonards Road, A308 Osborne Road and A308 Albert Road.
