Bollard block at pedestrian zone

A rising bollard is to be installed in a Berkshire town to stop people driving through a pedestrian zone.

Windsor council said it had taken the decision in order to reduce the risk of serious accidents in Peascod Street.

According to the council about 100 prohibited vehicles enter the zone every day.

The bollard will stop traffic, except buses and emergency vehicles, at Oxford Road East between 1100 and 1600 and from 2000 to 0600.

Oxford Road East will be closed for up to two weeks while the work is carried out.

The bus stop will temporarily move from Peascod Street to Charles Street and buses will be diverted, a council spokesman said.

In the event of a problem the bollard, monitored by CCTV, can also be lowered remotely by contacting the council's control room, the spokesman added.

Councillor Colin Rayner, Windsor's lead member for highways and street care, said: "The council has no choice but to take action before someone is hurt or killed by cars driving illegally."
