Fine warning over double parking

Drivers who leave vehicles across dropped kerbs or double park face being fined, a council has warned.

Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council said it is a response to problems caused for wheelchair users and parents with prams.

From 20 July, councils will be able to fine motorists who block driveways that do not have special signs or markings.

They could be issued with penalty charge notices with fines of £70 reduced to £35, if paid within 14 days.

Under the Trafffic Management Act 2004, local authorities outside London could only enforce penalty charges for parking on dropped kerbs if there were special signs or road markings in place, a council spokesman said.

Councillor Colin Rayner, lead member for highways and street care, said: "The threat of a substantial fine will hopefully make motorists think twice... and help to address the potentially dangerous practice of double parking in the street."
