An investigation has begun after a four-month-old boy died in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The baby was admitted to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading on Monday night.

He was later transferred to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital where he died at 0350 BST on Tuesday.

An address in Sedgewell Road in Sonning Common, between Reading and Henley-on-Thames, was later cordoned off. A 24-year-old man was arrested and bailed.

Officers are treating the death as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place on Friday.

Det Supt Karen Trego said: "We are still in the very early stages of the investigation and at this stage it is still not clear how the baby received the injuries."

Thames Valley Police said they were first alerted to the baby's condition by social services in Oxfordshire on Monday.
