A man who died after he was struck by a car as he made his way to a function at a golf club in Berkshire was a 66-year-old doctor.

Dr Salim Verjee was knocked down by the Mercedes at Sonning Golf Club, Duffield Road, at about midday on Saturday.

Dr Verjee, from a village near Abingdon, Oxfordshire , was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

It is believed he was attending a wedding when the incident happened.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "The incident happened while the car was in the process of being parked.

"It then collided with the gentleman and as a result he tragically died.

"All parties are co-operating and there is no suggestion of foul play."
