Bus station set for 400m revamp

A Berkshire town is set for a facelift with the redevelopment of its bus station and surrounding public space.

Designs proposed by Bblur Architecture to improve Slough bus station and the nearby area were approved at a borough council meeting last week.

The revamp is part of the £400m Heart of Slough regeneration scheme.

Construction work at the site on Brunel Way is due to begin in January, and councillors hope the bus station will be open to the public a year later.

It will be built on the site of the existing bus station, as well on land where a derelict office building and a multi-storey car park currently stand.

'Unattractive and dark'

Demolition work is due to start in September.

Andrew Blake-Herbert, director of strategy at Slough Borough Council, said: "The old bus station is tired, unattractive and dark.

"Its demolition will mark the beginning of the complete transformation of the centre of the town."

Matthew Bedward, director at Bblur, said: "The bus station is sited adjacent to the existing railway station on Brunel Way and we've created a very long undulating canopy which connects through to Wellington Street and the town centre.

"It will be a gleaming metal curve that cuts right through Slough to create a very positive pedestrian environment."

The new development will feature cafes, shops, ticket offices, a staff canteen and toilets.

Councillor James Swindlehurst said: "The town centre will be completely transformed by this visionary scheme, with the new bus station being a key element.

"Matthew's design will provide Slough with the gateway it deserves, and make access to the town centre easier for residents and visitors alike."
