One person has died and two others were taken to hospital with serious head injuries after being struck by vehicles on the M4 in Berkshire.

A silver Renault Clio collided with roadside furniture on the slip road at junction 10 of the westbound motorway.

A motorist stopped his vehicle to help the stricken driver but they were both then struck by a VW Passat.

A female passenger of the Passat was then struck by a blue-coloured Renault Clio after she got out.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said the driver of the silver Renault Clio, a man aged 41 from Woodley, has been pronounced dead.

The motorist who stopped to assist and the female passenger of the Passat were taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, in Reading.

The man, a 47-year-old from Bracknell, was in a serious but stable condition with head injuries.

The woman has been discharged from hospital.

Police said the M4 remained open although the slip road to the A329M at junction 10 was closed.
