New £6m centre for global warming

A new £6m centre aimed at tackling global warming is being created in Reading as part of massive investment in science training by the government.

Researchers at the centre at the University of Reading will work on creating "zero carbon" buildings.

The centre will train 50 research engineers to challenge "deep-rooted traditions" in the building industry.

Funding of £250m will pay for 44 training centres and fund more than 2,000 PhD students across the UK.

The investment was announced by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Professor Hazim Awbi, of the University of Reading, said: "Buildings are responsible for about 46% of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK.

"To meet this challenge requires a shift in the way future buildings are designed, constructed and operated.

"The centre will take its inspiration from nature to help develop new materials and systems to reduce energy use in buildings and construction."
