Boy killed in street fight named

The cordoned-off St Mary's Butts area of the town
The area remained closed for investigations on Friday

A teenage boy who died in a street fight in Reading has been named as 17-year-old Robert Spence.

Police believe two gangs were involved in the fight in the St Mary's Butts area of the town early on Friday.

Mr Spence, from Burghfield Common in the town, and two other men were taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, where the 17-year-old died of his injuries.

Detectives are continuing their investigation and have appealed for witnesses and information.

Supt Steve Kirk, of Thames Valley Police, said: "We believe that two separate groups were involved in the fight, and it is possible that one of the groups, made up of black and mixed race men all in their late teens and early 20s, made off in cars.

"I would urge anyone who was in this area of Reading at the time, anyone who witnessed the fight or anyone who has any information to get in contact urgently."
