Major gas leak closes town roads
A major gas leak has closed a number of roads in a Berkshire town.

A mechanical digger fractured a medium-pressure gas main in the Dowles Green area of Wokingham.

The smell and sound of escaping gas was detected several hundred metres away, but a spokeswoman for Southern Gas said there was no danger to the public.

No homes were evacuated, although Bell Foundry Lane, Warren House Road and Wiltshire Road were closed at about 10.30 GMT but reopened at 1430 GMT.

Engineers, wearing special breathing apparatus, managed to stem the leak and there was no loss of gas to customers in the area.
