Metal thefts from properties rise
Police in West Berkshire are trying to crack down on a spate of thefts sparked by a rise in metal prices.

The number of properties targeted has grown in the last few months, a spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said.

In the majority of incidents lead has been targeted.

Schools, charities, businesses and homes have all had metal removed by thieves, often causing serious damage when it is removed.

Supt Chris Shead, from Thames Valley Police, said: "Over the past few months there has been a large increase in the number of incidents where quantities of metal have been stolen from properties, especially lead.

"This reflects an increase across the UK, which is being caused by an increase in the price of scrap metal.

"In many cases large amounts of damage is being caused to the properties when the metal is ripped off. This comes at a huge cost to the owners."

Since 14 October, reported incidents have included two shops in Northbrook Street, Newbury and St Paul's Primary School, Tilehurst.

Also affected were properties in Burghfield, Tilehurst, Newbury and Calcot.

A 24-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of stealing lead from the YMCA in London Road, Newbury on Monday.

The man has been given a caution and the teenager was released on bail until 14 November.
