Sikh head teacher wants faith mix

Harshindar Battar wants other faiths to be represented

The head of a new Sikh primary school in Berkshire has pledged to take at least 20% of her pupils from non-Sikh backgrounds.

Harshindar Battar is the newly-appointed headteacher of the school, which is currently being built in Wexham Road, Slough.

The new school will take 420 pupils and Ms Battar wants at least 84 children to come from other faiths.

The school - England's second Sikh primary - will open in September.

The government is providing £6.2m in funding, while the Sikh community must raise a further £620,000.

Slough has one of the highest Sikh populations in the country, at about 10,000.
