Police investigating the brutal murder of 16-year-old Mary-Ann Leneghan have held a public meeting to reassure worried residents in the Reading area.

Detectives updated residents on the latest developments in the inquiry and outlined plans to restore confidence after Saturday's events.

The meeting was held at the Globe Church, Portman Road, on Thursday.

Mary-Ann's body was found in Prospect Park. Her 18-year-old friend was shot after both girls were abducted.

A police spokesman said: "The murder of Mary Ann Leneghan and the attack on her friend in Reading have sent shockwaves through the community.

"Teams of detectives and police staff continue to work around the clock to piece together exactly what happened and why and to find those responsible for such a horrendous incident.

"They are as stunned by what has happened as the people of Reading are.

"The community of Reading has shown time and time again that it is resilient, compassionate and willing to help where it can."

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information which would help the inquiry to contact them.
