Victims to shape police procedure
Victims and witnesses of crime are to officially help shape the way they are treated by the police and the courts in the Thames Valley.

The East Berkshire Victim Advisory Panel has been launched as a pilot project for the region.

It will use the experiences of victims and witnesses to "iron out persistent problems" in the criminal justice system, a police spokesman said.

The forum will allow people to voice their views on how they were treated.

'Real difference'

Acting Ch Insp Simon Bowden said: "By listening to the views of victims in a constructive manner we can make a real difference.

"In order to reduce crime and bring more offenders to justice, we must place victims and witnesses at the very centre of what we do."

It is hoped the first meeting will be held before the end of December, with three or four meetings held every year.

Volunteers to sit on the panel are being urged to apply to Thames Valley Police for details.
