London 'not sole gourmet choice'

Gordon Ramsay's restaurant in Chelsea is rated the UK's best
London is no longer the "be-all-and-end-all" for UK restaurant-lovers, according to a new guide.

Three of the top four restaurants in the country are outside the capital, The Good Food Guide's authors say.

The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons in Oxfordshire and Winteringham Fields in North Lincolnshire all rate nine out of 10.

But the only one to be awarded 10 out of 10 by the guide is Gordon Ramsay's restaurant in Chelsea, west London.

Berkshire retains its reputation as a culinary hotspot, with its two Michelin three-starred restaurants, Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck and Michel Roux's Waterside Inn being joined in the top 14 by the Vineyard at Stockcross.

Shropshire is just behind, with two establishments in Ludlow also getting eight marks each.

Andrew Turvil, the guide's editor, said: "Some of the most creative and imaginative cooking in the UK is taking place outside of London.

"The capital is not about to lose its position at the culinary vanguard, but it is great to see such good things happening all over the country, sometimes in unexpected locations.

"Anybody who thinks London is the be-all-and-end-all needs to expand their horizons."
