A mayor and a drag artist will see who has the most outlandish garb when the newest Gay Pride event is given the official civic seal of approval.

The backers of the upcoming Reading Pride event have been invited to outline their plans to mayor Richard Stainthorp in his parlour.

Festival host Sue Panover - also known as Jamie Wake - will be in full costume for the get-together.

Tuesday's meeting is being praised for showing acceptance of gay communities.

Chair of the Reading Pride planning committee Leslee Hopper said: "We are delighted to be invited to see the mayor and to tell him about the event.

"Members of the lesbian and gay community still suffer from discrimination and social isolation.

"The aim of a Pride event is, through visibility and education, to build strong and positive relations between all people which in turn will lead to a more accepting society."

Reading Pride - Berkshire's first ever Pride event - takes place on Saturday, 4 September.
