Centres support victims of rape

Two referral centres have opened in Hertfordshire to give support and medical services to victims of rape and serious sexual assault.

The centres in Cheshunt and Watford mean victims can seek advice and then decide how they want to proceed, Hertfordshire Police said.

Volunteers from Victim Support will be involved from the outset.

Police said its sexual offences investigation team is available if the victim wants to report the attack.

Staff at the centre can arrange for medical examinations and referral to after-care services such as counselling and sexual health clinics.

Results of medicals undertaken with a doctor can be stored until a victim feels they are ready to involve the police.
