Ten people had to be rescued from their homes after a fire broke out in a parade of shops in Bedfordshire.

Fire crews were called to Sundon Park Parade in Luton, in the early hours, where the only entrance and to their flats was blocked by the blaze.

Using ladders and an aerial platform, firefighters rescued seven people from three flats, while three other people were rescued from a balcony.

Several people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

An investigation by fire officers and scenes of crime officers has begun.
