Keepers at a zoo in Bedfordshire are beginning an annual stock take which involves a head count of more than 200 different species.

The count at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo includes four meerkats - John, Paul, George and Ringo - who came up to the zoo from ZSL London Zoo last year.

During the stock take every animal is counted - right down to the ants in the Discovery Centre.

The count is compulsory to enable the zoo to retain its licence.
