Motorists face long delays on M1

Motorists are facing long delays on the M1 in Bedfordshire after debris fell from a footbridge onto the motorway.

The Highways Agency said a vehicle travelling on the motorway hit the bridge causing debris to fall.

Engineers were called early in the morning to inspect the bridge, between junctions 11 and 12, and two lanes were closed on the northbound carriageway.

Operations manager for the Highways Agency Ray George said it was not yet known how long the work will take.
