Vomiting bug closes three wards

An outbreak of the winter vomiting virus has closed three wards at Bedford Hospital.

Richard Wells, Russell and Whitbread wards were closed to new admissions and patient transfers when patients showed symptoms of suspected norovirus.

Apart from wards in the Cygnet Wing, only essential visiting is permitted across the hospital.

It is hoped the measures will stop the spread of the infection among patients, visitors and staff.

Lead infection control nurse Juliet Magee said: "If you do need to visit the hospital, please ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before entering and when leaving the ward.

"Alcohol gel does not kill norovirus spores - soap and water will."
