Motorcycles, trolleys and tin cans are all hazardous for canal boats

A team of volunteers are taking to the towpaths alongside a flotilla of boats for a canal clean-up in Milton Keynes.

More than 30 people and 10 boats will spend three days on the Grand Union Canal cleaning from Fenny Stratford to Wolverton starting on Friday.

Volunteers from Inland Waterways Association Milton Keynes branch (IWA) have previously recovered a shotgun, a cut-up car and mailbags.

IWA branch chairman Tony Collins said it would benefit the array of wildlife.

He said: "Despite regular clean-ups and British Waterway's maintenance programme we are always surprised at how much rubbish we find.

"The removal of the rubbish will benefit the wonderful array of wildlife on the canal as well as the boaters and thousands of people who use it on a daily basis."
