Work has started on a building a fire station on a site where the existing premises will be demolished to build homes.
The station in Lower High Street, Watford, will provide fire cover for the centre and south of the town.
New training facilities will be included, as well as amenities for disabled visitors and female staff.
Chief fire officer Roy Wilsher said the improvement would put firefighters at the heart of the community.
Work is due to take 62 weeks to complete with the new station opening for duty in November 2009.
The current station in Whippendell Road will remain fully operational until then.
