Improvements to the A421 in Bedfordshire have been given the go-ahead by the Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly.
The work, due to start later this year, includes turning the A421 between juction 13 of the M1 and Bedford into a dual carriageway.
The scheme will complete the link between the M1 and A1.
Councillor Tom Wootton from the county council said the project would improve driving conditions for motorists.
"Obviously we have been waiting such a long time for this new road, which will transform the unacceptable conditions drivers currently experience along this stretch of road and at junction 13," he said.
"The new dual carriageway will provide a safer route and will help prevent accidents."
