A man who admitted raping a 21-year-old student nurse in 1995 in Bedfordshire has been jailed for seven years.

Robert Moore, from Life Close, Luton, was traced using DNA techniques after unsolved cases were re-examined.

The student was abducted and raped by two men when walking home through Bury Park after a night out in Luton.

Moore, 32, who pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and one of indecent assault, was traced by the police review team, Luton Crown Court heard.

The unnamed student nurse accepted a lift from two men in a car while walking home through the park.

However, she was taken to an industrial estate on the outskirts of Luton where they both attacked her.

Moore was arrested on 8 August last year after advances in DNA techniques matched him to the crime.

During mitigation, his barrister Jonathan Green said: "This was an appalling, shameful and horrific offence and he is disgusted with himself and has lived with it for these 12 years.

"Fortunately it seems as if the victim has had the mental robustness and fortitude to overcome the damage he accepts he did."

The other man has not been brought to justice.

Passing sentence, Judge Richard Foster told Moore: "That young lady was humiliated and violated and left with memories that will scar the rest of her life. It is to her credit that she has done so well since these events."

Moore is currently serving out the remainder of an eight-year sentence for aggravated burglary, from which he was released early in 2002.

The sentence is due to expire in March next year when the seven-year sentence will begin.
