A horse died and another was recovering in an equine hospital after passers-by found them in a weak state, collapsed in a field.

The horses were rescued after being discovered by dog walkers in Hertfordshire.

One of the pair of bay-coloured colts was thought to have collapsed overnight and had been left in the field opposite Holwell caravan site.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said the charity was trying to trace the owners.
