Two photographs taken by a pub landlady of former policeman Garry Weddell show him clearly in breach of the bail condition that barred him from Bedfordshire.

The pictures were taken by Janet Walker who became suspicious of the ex-Met officer when she saw him taking pictures of her pub, the Pack Horse, at Kensworth near Dunstable.

At one point she challenged him only to be told he was working for Bedfordshire Police and taking photographs of cctv cameras.

Mr Weddell, suspected of killing his wife and mother-in-law, is pictured talking to his own mother and another woman and placing something in the boot of his car.

Mrs Walker took the photographs from her kitchen window but did not know who he was when she spotted him at about 0900 GMT on 29 October 2007.

It was her subsequent call to the police that led to his arrest for the breach of his bail conditions.

Mrs Walker told the BBC: "I noticed that he was taking a picture of the pub from the car park so I went out and asked what he was doing.

"He said he was working for Bedfordshire police and that he was taking pictures of the cctv cameras.

"He asked what my name was and then I just came back into the pub and locked the door.

"I thought to myself 'he didn't show me any id' and that's when I phoned the police just to double-check."

By the time two detectives arrived, Mr Weddell had left to take his mother to Newcastle. The officers interviewed Mrs Walker and took her camera away.

They told her the man she had photographed should not have been in Bedfordshire and that it was "an ongoing case".

A short time later, Mr Weddell was arrested at the Surry home of his barrister brother, Geoffrey, where he was living while on bail. His brother had put up £200,000 surety.

After Mrs Walker reported him to the police he was arrested and again released on bail, this time by magistrates in Woking.

Mr Weddell who was charged with murdering his wife at the family home in Dunstable, was found dead on 12 January. He is thought to have shot himself.

It was not until Mrs Walker saw Mr Weddell's face in media reports that she realised who had been in the car park of her pub.

"I didn't connect who it was until the shooting on the Monday, then I thought, 'I know that face'.

"I was quite shocked that he was out of prison and shocked that he was still out of prison after being caught in the car park."

She does not believe Mr Weddell's subsequent claim in court that he did not realise he was in Bedfordshire.

She says he introduced himself as a Bedfordshire police officer.

"It's on the Beds/Herts border and it's clearly signed. There's no way he wouldn't have known," she said.

The landlady said she replays in her mind the encounter she had with Mr Weddell who spent an hour in her pub car park.

"I actually wonder if I had recognised him or shown that I recognised him what could he have done? Could I have been in danger myself?"
