A scout master who sexually abused youngsters in his troop during the 1980s has been jailed for four years.

David Bridges had denied nine counts of indecently assaulting six scouts during a trial at St Albans Crown Court.

The married 54-year-old, of London Road, Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire, was convicted by a jury of seven assaults on five of the boys.

Bridges committed the attacks inside a scout hut in Sarratt, near Watford, Herts from 1982-87, the court heard.

Jurors heard how Bridges abused the boys during sleep-overs at the village scout hut.

Victims told how they would wake in the night to find Bridges abusing them.

The offences only came to light last year when one of the scouts, now aged 36, confided in police about the abuse.

When asked why he had waited so long to make an allegation, the victim said he had not wanted to tell his father, who has now died of lung cancer, but he now did not want anyone else to suffer.

Giving evidence, he said: "My son had started at a cub group and I didn't want him to have these kind of things in his life - he's eight."

Further allegations of sexual abuse came to light when detectives traced other scouts who had been in Mr Bridges troop.

In sentencing him, Judge John Plumstead told Bridges: "You had power over young boys at an impressionable age.

"In some cases you gave them drink."

Judge Plumstead ordered Bridges' name be added to the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Bridges was also banned from working with children.
