County council set to be scrapped
Plans are being made to scrap Bedfordshire County Council, according to Bedford MP Patrick Hall.

He says all services in Bedfordshire will be controlled by Bedford Borough Council and a merger of South Beds and Mid Beds district councils.

Luton is already a unitary authority. The official decision on unitary status is expected to be announced by the government in the afternoon.

The announcement is part of a series of changes to local government.

Any approved new unitary councils are expected to come into place in April 2009.
