Speed cameras in M1 roadworks catch 25,500 drivers
More than 25,500 drivers have been fined for speeding in roadworks to widen the M1 in the past 12 months.

A 40mph (66kph) speed limit is enforced between J8 for Hemel Hempstead and J11 for Luton by cameras that calculate an average speed through the roadworks.

Herts Police said this was to encourage drivers to slow down rather than brake suddenly as they approach a camera.

A spokesman said the number of deaths on the M1 had fallen from four in 2005 to one in the past 12 months.
