Waste site public inquiry begins
Landfill site
About two million tonnes of rubbish is dumped at the site every year
A public inquiry begins into whether the life of a landfill site in Bedfordshire should be extended.

The Waste Recycling Group has applied to keep the site at Brogborough, due to close in January 2008, open for another 11 months.

Local people have been campaigning against the plans, claiming it would be detrimental to the environment.

The county council turned down an extension appeal in April, but the waste company appealed.

The public inquiry is expected to last three weeks, beginning with a public meeting on Tuesday evening for people to raise their concerns with the planning inspector.

About two million tonnes of waste is dumped at the site every year.
