New university officially opened

The University of Bedfordshire will cater for 17,000 students
The new University of Bedfordshire is officially opened on Tuesday.

The University of Luton and De Montfort University's Bedford campus have joined to create the new institution with a student population of 17,000.

The Luton campus has recently seen huge investment with 25m more to come. Facilities include a 5.5m media centre and 8.2m learning resources centre.

The Bedford campus is in the middle of a 34m redevelopment programme, including a 20m accommodation block.

Dean of Bedford University, Professor Kate Jacques, said: "For the region, it's very exciting. It means more students in the town.

"It means improved economic performance for everybody and provides employment for local people.

"The development and future opportunities presented by having a university here are tremendous."
