'Worst town' to be given new look
Luton town centre
Luton town centre is to receive a face-lift
Britain's 'worst' town has received £692,000 to help improve its town centre environment.

The European funding was allocated to St George's Square in Luton to encourage business investment, job creation and retail sales.

In an online poll last year, Luton was named Britain's worst town.

Councillor Sid Rutstein said: "People will see a complete upgrading and visible evidence of regeneration."

He added: "We welcome this as being the start of very tangible improvements to the town centre."

It is hoped the new square development will also host the annual Luton carnival and other events and exhibitions.

Funding for the development has come from the European Regional Development Fund, as well as Luton Borough Council and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
