A thumb found in Essex is that of a missing man, police have said.

Forensic tests proved the thumb found by a member of the public in the Ilford area on Wednesday belongs to Mahmood Ahmad, of Watford, Hertfordshire.

The 41-year-old has not been seen since he left work at a kebab house in Aldgate, London, on 7 March.

Mohammed Riaz, 33, of no fixed abode, has been charged with kidnap, false imprisonment, harassment and a dwelling burglary.

Four other people have been arrested and are being questioned, Hertfordshire Police said.

Det Ch Insp Melanie Burn, from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: "We are urgently appealing for any information on Mahmood's whereabouts.

"He may well be injured and need urgent medical help.

"We need assistance from members of the public to find him or to provide any other information which they think could be relevant."
