Train brings down overhead lines

Services on the West Coast mainline between London, the Midlands, the North and Scotland are severely disrupted after a train brought down power lines.

It happened at Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire just before lunchtime.

Only two of the four tracks are currently in use, restricting services throughout the section.

Network Rail said engineers would be working through the night in an effort to enable a normal service to resume on Tuesday morning.

They are investigating why the power lines came down and are looking at possible faults on the train engine and the line.

Engineers are also looking to see if the cold weather had an effect.
