Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help create a line of light along the length of Hadrian's Wall.

Organisers are looking for 500 people to help create the spectacle on 13 March, which will light up the wall from one end to the other.

The first of the lights will be illuminated at Segedunum Roman Fort, at Wallsend, North Tyneside.

And more will then be lit in sequence all the way to Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast.

Each of the volunteer "illuminators" will be responsible for one of the 500 individual points of light that will be placed at 820ft (250m) intervals along the route of the 84-mile (135km) Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail.

'Massive challenge'

Linda Tuttiett, chief executive of Hadrian's Wall Heritage Ltd, said: "We want to give people from all over the country, as well as local people, the chance to get involved.

"It really will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and something we think people will remember for a very long time."

The event is being organised so people with any level of physical ability can take part.

John Farquhar-Smith, who is producing the spectacle, said: "This event will obviously be a massive logistical challenge involving a large team of experts and the highly experienced volunteers who work with Hadrian's Wall Heritage Ltd along the National Trail."

All the volunteers will receive a special scroll commemorating their involvement.
