Shepherd officiated in 92 Tests and 172 one-day internationals

A memorial service has taken place for retired international cricket umpire David Shepherd.

Dozens of sporting greats attended Holy Trinity Church in Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, to pay their respects.

He was best-known for officiating in 92 test matches and more than 170 one-day internationals.

Earlier this month hundreds packed the parish church at Instow, north Devon, for the funeral of Mr Shepherd, who died in October aged 68.

Among the congregation on Thursday morning were Mike Gatting and Jack Russell.

Mr Shepherd lived in Instow with his partner of 36 years, Jenny.

He was born on 27 December 1940, in Bideford, and played county cricket for Gloucestershire from 1965 to 1979.

He umpired from 1981 to 2005 and stood in his first Test match at Old Trafford in Manchester in 1985 when England played Australia.

Mr Shepherd died on 28 October after a long battle with cancer.
