Van driver dies in motorway crash

Police at crash scene
It is thought the driver lost control of the transit van on the M25

A 49-year-old van driver has died in a road crash on the M25 in Surrey.

It is thought he lost control of the van on the anti-clockwise carriageway, just past junction six, before Clacket Lane services, on Sunday morning.

Surrey Police believe the van left the road and stopped in a wooded area at the bottom of an embankment.

Officers said the man, who is from Essex but has not yet been named, died at the scene. The carriageway was closed, but one lane reopened later.

Police warned motorists to find alternative routes because of heavy tailbacks.

Anyone who saw the van before the crash, or witnessed it leaving the road at about 0730 GMT, has been asked to contact the Surrey Police collision investigation unit.

The driver was the only person in the van at the time of the crash and no other vehicles were involved.
