Mr Mason is alleged to have made racist comments towards Jason Euell

A man has appeared before magistrates charged with racially abusing a footballer during a Carling Cup tie.

Robert Mason, 47, of Bradwell Lane, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, is alleged to have made racist comments towards Blackpool striker Jason Euell.

Mr Mason, who was arrested during Stoke City's win over Blackpool in September, was not asked to enter a plea.

He was bailed to reappear at Stoke-on-Trent Magistrates' Court on 24 November after submissions by his solicitor.

The defendant is charged with engaging in racially-aggravated threatening behaviour with intent to cause the player harassment, alarm or distress.
