Thousands pay tribute to war dead

Carlisle Remembrance service
Veterans gathered in Carlisle city centre

Remembrance Sunday services have taken place across the North East and Cumbria in memory of the men and women killed in conflicts past and present.

Services were held at Durham Cathedral, Middlesbrough Cenotaph, Newcastle's War Memorial and Carlisle Cathedral.

In Hartlepool, there was a parade in the market square, while hundreds of people also gathered in Redcar, Darlington, Whitehaven and Egremont.

Parades and a wreath laying took place at Sunderland's war memorial.

The Queen led the nation's tributes at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.
